Spirit kettles were so named for the ‘spirits’ that were lit on fire to heat the tea or water which was kept in it. For large gatherings the water was kept hot by the kettle to top off the guests tea. Tea was a relatively new commodity when these kettles were invented and not a leaf went to waste! A tray was often used beneath the stand to prevent damage to whatever table it was placed on. This spirit kettle was made by the Elkington & Co of England and has a hallmark date of 1857. The massive tray beneath is part of the set but made by another company whose hallmark I have yet to identify. It measure 30" x 19"
A beautiful and useful way to brighten up any tea time!
