Vintage! RARE commemorative scent bottle from Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee held June of 1887! This 130 year old(!) perfume bottle or scent flask was one of many styles that were distributed in honor of the Queens 50th year of reign. Made by Royal Worcester, this porcelain beauty has survived unscathed! It may have a slight patina but it glows. The details also remain strong on the white metal crown. The front of the flask has Queen Victoria's bust with a blue 1837 VICTORIA 1887 ribbon. The reverse has the rose, thistle and shamrock symbol of the Union, also in relief. Even the gild is in remarkable condition. Though many were made, these porcelain flasks are fragile and not many survived the years. A wonderful piece to enhance a collection. A rare find!
This item measures 3" x 2" x .5" with the crown being .75" at its widest
I cannot just describe this item by its historical facts. As a collector, my joy is in finding these little moments of frozen time. I get giddy seeing items like this one! Someone had to carve the original! As a jeweler, one of my jobs is to carve wax to make an original piece. So when I hold this I imagine that person who was commissioned to carve the bust, the Union symbol and the heraldic side details. Then there's the model maker who carved the coronation crown as the screw top. Knowing the process, I can imagine them at their benches, Not very different from my own. Though I have electricity, I still use files and tools in existence for centuries. The detail in the profile and realism of the carving of the Queens bust is something I can see myself doing. Taking the time to get it right. The zoning out that happens as you create. That meditative state. As I hold this piece, turning it over and over in my hand, I study it as if I was that commissioned artist, looking at their original carving, for the hundreth time, checking for those tiny marrs that will make or break the piece. The scrutiny that adds your own touch....
Sometimes you can get caught up in the mundane jobs you are required to do. One that will be replicated thousand of times and just be cast aside when empty. And because it was porcelain, broken and discarded. Until another person finds just this one of your carvings and appreciates the efforts you put in to your job. Thats priceless!
I hope this flasks' future owner takes time to hold this piece, admire the details, take in the faint floral scents that still remain from its interior, before setting it in a center place of honor amongst their collectibles!
